First Impression: Mookuthi Amman

Updated: Dec 27, 2020

A perfect Diwali treat is here and it is as good as it was promoted...

There are only a few movies which one wants to run endlessly not because it is the best but because it clicked in a very good way for them personally. I feel that Mookuthi Amman will be a movie on that list for me.

The movie gradually started by introducing the family members Engels Ramasamy, played by RJ Balaji. It was preceded by a monologue narrated by Ramasamy which too was relatable like this family's troubles. This makes us root for the characters and this in turn perfectly sets up the tone for the rest of the movie.

The titular character played by Nayanthara comes into the picture only after the 30-hour mark. Her role is like an extended cameo rather than a full-fledged one. This too helped the movie in a big way as we care more about Ramasamy's family. The screen presence of Nayanthara was brilliant and she scores many brownie points for her good comedic timing with RJ Balaji.

At the halfway stage we are introduced to the antagonist, a middle man named Bhagavathi Baba. The villain character gelled well with the flow of the movie. His motivations were nicely defined and this added a good layer to that character. The interview scenes between him and Ramasamy seemed a bit cliched. The main problem is that world-famous godmen fails miserably to some small traps set by this family. [ But again those were told by the Amman herself so who to question? ]

No scenes seemed unnecessary to the movie. This is the area where RJ Balaji and the team improved a lot from their previous venture, LKG. To note, in one of his many interviews RJ Balaji told that his team didn't try forcefully to avoid any scenes only because it was already in any social media trolls. I think that was a smart move because they have packaged the movie well. Though the message in the second half seemed preachy is an important one.

Coming back to cricket, [Pechuku 300 vati] "November 14th unga Disney+ HotstarVIP la varum" is the statement the writer-director RJ Balaji told a hundred times in the IPL commentary box. This kind of promotion was well received. On top of that, the other promotions they did was top notch too. They knew perfectly well how to promote the movie and whom to target. The said marketing also included both the present and former cricketers, which might help them promote the movie in other languages too.

Overall this is really one of the best entertainment for this festival occasion which also can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Movie Rating: A-

Little Things:

  • Urvashi for the second time this week was terrific both in comedic and emotional scenes

  • The way the pop culture references were used was neat

  • Deva, Ramasamy's sister asking for a day-off was a nice touch

  • The scenes included in the trailers like the Manobala's one( available as the second sneak) and the fight scene for RJ Balaji was skipped in the movie
