Emmys 2020

The Emmy nominations are here...

"By all means, TV connects us all", was the words said by the producer of Emmys Mr.Frank Scherma at the start of the announcement.

Even though the award show is scheduled two months from now, there is a lot of excitement for the nominations. One reason is because of the absence of big guns like GOT there is a lot of chance for the smaller shows to get nominated. Or because of the increase in the number of nominations in comedy and drama categories.

The most promising category to look out for is the Limited Series category. As it has some brilliant shows like Watchmen, Mrs.America, Unbelievable and Unorthodox. So without any further ado lets go into this year's nominations...

Surprises:

The inclusion of Mandalorian and Stranger Things in the best drama category is definitely a major surprise. Mandalorian's first season was a very good season but getting recognition at this level is a surprise. The Stranger Things' third installment is definitely pale in comparison with their first two installments. The acting category is completely dominated by the members of the Succession family. With 2 nominations in Lead Actor, 3 nominations in Supporting Actor and 1 nomination in Supporting Actress, and a total of 18 nominations to its name it is leading in drama category along with Ozark and its 18 nominations. The period comedy The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel leads with 20 nods. It is followed by the comedy Schitt's Creek, which is a huge relief as we get a chance to see them crowned winners one last time. Along with the show, Annie Murphy too got a nod this year. Reese Witherspoon not getting any nominations for her role in any three dramas is another surprise. Jeffrey Wright and Thow Thandie Newton getting their nominations for Westworld considering they had a lesser role this season.

Biggest Snubs:

The biggest snub of this year is leaving out Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seahorn for the leading actor and supporting actress categories respectively. How could they do this? This is definitely one of the best performances of this year so far. Rotten Tomatoes called it a no-brainer to not nominate Bob Odenkirk during their predictions. This is a really big letdown. Another snub could be Ramy not getting nominated for the Best Comedy category(we know that it is a tough category). Westworld's third season is not at all a good one yet omitting that from the best drama category feels like a little letdown. While Octavia Spencer got her nominations, the leading ladies from Unbelievable are snubbed.

Happy that:

Great to see the last ever episodes some comedies like The Good Place, Modern Family, and Schitt's Creek get nods for writing and directing.Happy that Linda Cardellini got her deserved nomination. To see Bagman and Bad Choice Road (both from BCS) getting its nominations. What We Do In The Shadows getting this many nominations this year. BoJack Horseman is nominated for the Best Animated Program category. It is good to see Unorthodox and Shira Hass got nominations. Curb Your Enthusiasm getting its nominations. Happy that Damon Lindelof getting nominated. El Camino has got its fair share of nominations. D’arcy Carden getting her first-ever Emmy nomination.

Though not a snub, yet a letdown:

Mr.Robot a wonderful show not getting any recognition today is a big letdown. We expected at least some nominations in writing and directing categories. The same can be said about Silicon Valley, which is not in its prime yet only getting a single nod in editing is kind of a letdown.
