Review Bytes [S02E63]: Hacks [S01E09-E10]

The BRILLIANT first season came to a brilliant end with the last two episodes. On the account of them being brilliant throughout the whole season, they have been renewed for a second season at HBO Max, for which I'm truly thankful. All this being said let us break down the emotionally funny episodes one last time at Palmetto, sorry I meant this year.

These two episodes were as funny as they were emotional. It started with Ava going to LA for her new job interview while Deborah prepares for her new routine. Marcus is worried that he is not been seen by Deborah and a little jealous of Ava for taking his spot. All these plots boil down to the point of whether Deborah does her new routine at her last show or not.

The characters have been perfectly set on the course in the previous episodes. This bears the fruit in the finale as both of them not only know and respect each other for what they are but also start to be kind to others and accept who they are. The leads' character development was the main plus point of the first season. They nicely added the layers to two already complex characters.

Every comedy worked out perfectly they planned. The plot involving Jimmy and his assistant Kayla was really funny without being insensitive at any point. Like these, the emotional beats too blended well into the episodes. Ava's father though just appeared in a single episode, his demise carried a lot of weight in the proceedings. This shows the brilliance of the writing team.

We are almost at the halfway stage of 2021, and this show is thus far the best one yet along with the close competition from Feel Good(S02). I am really glad to see the show being renewed for a second season.

Episodes Rating: A+

Season Rating: A+

Little Things:

  • Paul W Downs as Jimmy is the perfect casting choice like I mentioned in the previous reviews. Kayla's character is such fun

  • The other supporting characters though didn't get much screen time, their roles and characteristics are made interesting for an expansion in the next seasons

  • Deborah's back story is also an added advantage to the show. It says a lot more than some shows

  • Hannah Einbinder is awesome as Ava. Performance wise she stands neck to neck with the legend Jean Smart
