From Steve Carell and Greg Daniels (The Office and Parks and Recreation), who had quite a busy month with two new releases, comes a new workplace comedy. I had such a huge huge expectation for this show when it was announced. With this amazing cast, crew, and a huge budget, we as fans would love to see a different show than the one which is filled with the sitcom cliches. The comic bits didn't land properly and more than often just flew over my head. Some plot points were not interesting and didn't work as they thought it might. No character other than Mark Naird (Steve Carell) has an arc and those characters feel two-dimensional. The talents of Schwartz are wasted as he was given nothing to perform, though he more than proved that he can improvise any given situation in his comedy special. I am not saying that nothing worked in this show. Steve Carell, as usual, delivered his best. John Malkovich and Don Lake worked better along with Steve. The discussions held in Washington DC was great each time. Then again the main plot was good, weird, and unusual and promised a lot. But the execution of each episode is where they are lacking in their first season. I fear that they have not built up storylines for a longer run. I am having my fingers crossed for them to bounce back sharply in the second season. And hoping that Jimmy O Yang's character Mr.Chan would be funnier. A fun thought occurred to me while watching this show is that it has a lot of similarities between "The Mythic Quest" (Apple TV+ ) even though they have completely different storylines.
Season Rating : C+
