The first season of one of the weirdest shows has come to an end. So let us see the review about it...

As we have seen in our earlier reviews for this season, an episode in this show both concentrated on moving things forward and also had its own unique theme to it. Those themes which worked most of the time made this show what it is today. Their episodic approach was a very good idea that has to be applauded.

The showrunner and creator Misha Green said in an interview, "We brought it to HBO because we wanted it to feel like a movie every episode."

The above-mentioned approach made each episode stand much taller most of the time (obviously excluding the adventure episode). That might be the reason why one would remember each episode by their stories, like the terrors of 1921, or the war love story, or a haunted house, or a road trip through allegories, or the madness of multiverse, etc.

Coming to the characterizations Tic never seemed like the hero, as often we only got to see him get angry at others or whine. This is not bad by any means when a character has other interesting characterizations. This problem is overcome by the other lead character, Leti. Though Montrose too seemed like a one-note character his character arc came a full circle in the penultimate episode. Acting-wise everyone did a very good job, each actor owned their character well. Special shout out to Wunmi Mosaku and the ever-brilliant Michael K. Williams. Wunmi Mosaku as Ruby in the episode "Strange Case" made a clear statement that was new in terms of both race and weight. And Michael K. Williams in the Rewind 1921 showed the horrors of 1921 through his eyes, which the title sorely missed.

Yeah for a horror show it really had zero scariest moments involving ghosts or monsters. It had scarier moments to show us through the past and the present than through jump shocks. This might upset some horror fans when they get into the show only by seeing its label.

The way they ended Dee's character in this season didn't quite land. That scene was too extreme for her character. For an HBO show, the special effects seemed a little off.

But there are no jarring missteps in their first season. It is a very good show and might even be one of the top contenders for the year-end lists. If anyone has missed or skipped it I recommend you give it another try as it not only a show of allegories but it has more to offer.

Though the story came a full circle in their last episode still hoping for a second season renewal.
