Review Bytes [S02E20]: Fargo [S04]

VK

If you have followed my blog from the start you would know how much I love Fargo. I was generally excited when they announced this season that too after a long gap. So let us get into the review...

Spoiler Warning - As I wanted to discuss this show in-depth I have waited one week for everyone to catch up on the show.

The basic plot is nothing new baring the setup. The story is about rival two crime families and their ways to gain power over the other. These gangs follow some unnecessary strategy like swapping their youngest sons. This season is narrated by Ethelrida whose story intertwines with the gangs.

This makes it the first time in four seasons to not have a mistake committed by a commoner which they try to cover. Accordingly, this removes the immatureness of the first time killers like in the first two seasons. That immatureness holds the key to Fargo as much as the honest lowkey cops in all the previous seasons. Though we get to see the ever-charming Timothy Olyphant as the honest cop in this iteration, we miss the heart of the Solversons (played by Alison Tolman and Patrick Wilson) and Burgle (played by Carrie Coon) which is the soul of Fargo.

The main takeaways from this season are nailing the casting once again and the impressive soundtrack. This cast suited perfectly for this story. It was a nice refreshment to see Chris Rock in such a dramatic role. He delivered the given material perfectly. The same applies to other actors too. The characters such as Ethelrida and Satchel are a good addition. Their story had an edge over the others as it was something new for the Fargo. A nice surprise was Gaetano's character.

The above-mentioned edge for Ethelrida has an issue too. It is because the writers didn't have enough material for her other than her being an intelligent student. The same applies to Oraetta Mayflower (played by Jessie Buckley) who operates in the story only as a weird character. These two characters are mentioned together because Ethelrida didn't face any threatening issues from others whereas Oraetta didn't seem like a notable threat to the other character at any given time. This waters down the story build around them. This is the place where Fargo has always scored hugely.

It is always an issue when the cast is as huge as this season. Many characters won't have enough material to perform. This issue clearly suited the Emmy winner Ben Winshaw's character perfectly. Ben is performing this kind of saddened character (searching for something) for the nth time in the last couple of years. He though did well had every minimum to perform. His chemistry with Satchel was good and it was very well captured. This relationship drove the episodes well. Odis' mannerism kind of seemed a little irritating at first but that become a good characterization in the second half. This season missed a ruthless character like Malvo and VM Varga.

In conclusion, this season had its fair share of downs so it is can neither be compared to neither the well-made first nor definitely to the perfect second season. This season had a good story and if only they told this crisply and concisely without the unnecessary drags this could have been the top tier Fargo.

Season Rating: B

Little Things:

  • At this point in time, we know how each season ends particularly the antagonists' end. This made the last episode to look like an epilogue to the first ten episodes

  • The moment Zelmare escapes we knew the fate of Loy
