Review Bytes [S02E32]: Mr. Mayor [S01]

VK

From the creators of 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt came a new show, "Mr. Mayor". It has concluded its first season with nine episodes two weeks before. The show did not have a good start but did its quality improve overtime let us see in the review.

If you have noticed my Instagram bio you definitely would know how much I love Tina Fey as a creator. The duo's first show "30 Rock" is a pure comedic gem and their second one "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is good stuff too. So when they announced this show I was obviously excited.

But boy they disappointed me with the underwhelming two-part pilot episode. It was one of the most boring hours of television. Their comedy was so broad and they did not have a specific tone. But I kept watching the show week after week hoping for the duo's quirky and unique style of packing more funny scenes.

Their style was seen in bits and pieces from the third episode's cold open. The show's quality improved each week with them concentrating on a single theme. The show's sixth episode was one of the best episodes so far in the year and most likely might finds its place in the year-end lists too. What seemed like a bottle episode turned out to be the best of this season. The character's growth and purpose were more clear as the season went on. This helped the show in the latter half as well and the episodes got really good.

Ted Danson's Neil was a good lead and had a perfect scope to play nicely along with all the other characters. Apart from him Arpi too had a good repertoire with others, but her character was underused in the last few episodes. I think Jayden and Mikaela were used nicely, no concerns there. But Orly and Tommy had inconsistent arcs. Orly seemed to have a bigger role but as the season went on she was left out of a couple of episodes. But her character was modified better in the last two episodes and it was good. Tommy though was present in all the episodes he did not have a memorable or a stand-out plot for him. These issues led to inconsistency in the character arcs.

The renewal for a second season is not yet announced. I am looking forward to the renewal as I kinda liked the characters and would like to see their stories. Hoping the series gets a renewal and the show has more episodes like the latter half of this season.

Season Rating: B-

Best Episode: Respect in the Workplace
