Different decades of Uncle Nicky's story unfolds in today's episode. With one of the best cold-opens yet the episode started with a bang. Did that spark be retained throughout the episode let us find out...
The story continues directly from the previous week's final shot when Uncle Nicky makes a sudden visit. At present we see the more positive Nicky who can't wait to meet his great-niece and great-nephew. When the story moves to the past decades we see the man who was alone and detached from the world after the war. If we move past a decade before that we could see the shy yet sentimental Nicky. All that Nicky from 1969 wants is for his parents to be happy. This barrage of plots revolving around the fan-favorite character helps in building his backstory.
The way they brought the moon landing into the episode was good. It helped in bridging the stories of his parents and his new girlfriend. Sally didn't leave quite an impact in this episode but the reason for her to be here was justified. It improved Nicky's story a little. At least we got to see the young jolly guy. The story with Nicky after the war though small in duration when compared to the others, had quite an impact on both the brothers. Jack seeking some other's advice for his proposal and Nicky trying to see Jack after so many months were both important in the bigger context. Nicky would have got his brother back or maybe he could have explained his side of the story a little early, both of which could have impacted Jack's proposal which could have changed the whole story. These are the scenes that could have been made better without the shooting restrictions.
Coming back to the more positive Nicky in over 50 years. His excitement to meet the newborns was so refreshing to see. His way of showing his love by making the toys was so so so so good. Adding Jennifer Morrison's Cassidy to mix was a brilliant idea as all the while we see the growth of Nicky we also could figure some of her's too. Without a doubt, they two are some of the stand-outs of the last season. His way of overcoming the hurdles to get a replacement gift shows his character growth as along well with the phone call with Cassidy.
Griffin Dunne has to be really appreciated for that monologue at the end of the episode. He gave one of the best heartwarming speeches practically to no one on the other side. For that Griffin has to be appreciated.
Episode Rating: A-
LittleThings:
Do you think that Sally might resurface in the present? Or do you think that ring in the future Nicky's hand is not related to her? I would prefer the second one
