Review Bytes [S02E43]: Rutherford Falls [S01]

VK

The new Michael Schur comedy has arrived this week, and let us see how it stacks up against his other creations which are some of the best TV shows of all time.

Nathan played by Ed Helms is the last Rutherford living in the Rutherford Falls, the place founded by his ancestors. The issue arises when the townspeople want the statue of Big Larry, the founder, to be removed. This brings Nathan and his friend Reagen against each other. Terry, CEO of Minishonka's casino who wants the best for his tribe becomes the main reason for the rising problem.

The storyline is a very big plus for the show. The way they developed the characters has to be appreciated. The show doesn't have any character with evil motivations. How the history of a town is viewed by different people of different backgrounds forms the crux of the show. The town's history is woven into the three lead characters' lives and actions, which might change the town's future.

Each character has clear-cut motivations and ambitions, which led the writers to be effective with extracting the comedy out of them. Another plus point is dealing with the characters of different cultural backgrounds. The main question which prevails throughout the show is which and whose history is more important. This unanswerable question ponders over each character's heads as well us.

The show's clear focus is another positive thing. Though the show is good it can be improved in some ways, which might push the show to be in the same echelon as other Michael Schur created comedies. I think that they have told us more story than needed for a 10 episode first season. It doesn't affect the show, but if they had concentrated/lingered on some stories more, we would have got a perfect first season. The Reagen - Nathan friendship could have been explored more which would have provided more emotional strength. I am glad to see Dustin Milligan's Josh is not some evil sketchy journalist, which would have been a slight bummer as his last role of Ted (Schitt's Creek) is such a loving person. Josh's character would have definitely benefited from a bigger role, considering Dustin Milligan fitted the role perfectly. His character is one that was affected by the story's pace. That said Josh and Reagen's relationship was a good touch.

After watching the first eight episodes of this season I thought that the show has good potential and it will only improve as the seasons go on. So I am hoping that with the coming seasons the show will only get better and better.

Season Rating: B+

Little Things:

  • Jesse Leigh is definitely the find of the season. Bobbie's character gelled well with others

  • Handling such a subject is always tricky as it has a chance of veering into the stereotypical territory

  • With this Peacock now have added another good comedy to their already big lineup
