A new Peacock comedy executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock premiered last week and let us talk about it.
At first, we have to really appreciate the casting department and Tina Fey (according to the creator Meredith Scardino in the THR podcast) for assembling such a great cast all around.
The plot revolves around the once popular band, "Girl5Eva". The band plans to come together one more time after disbanding almost 15 years ago. Along the ride, we are also introduced to each group member's personal challenges.
One can't avoid but feel that some characters are similar to the earlier works of Tina Fey and Robert Carlock especially 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Sara Bareilles' Dawn feels a little like the continuation of Liz Lemon. The other two characters Summer and Wickie played by Busy Philipps and Renee Elise Goldsberry feel more like Jenna Maroney and Jacqueline White. But this doesn't affect the show in any major way. It just looks like the continuation of those characters.
Coming from the school of those two the creator Meredith Scardino brings all the best quips and gags from those two shows. Like the fast-paced jokes, intercutting flashbacks, very special guest stars, random dialogues, and wacky characters who can be relatable. This makes me like this show even more as I love all these things.
Apart from this the character's growth in the season both professionally and personally makes this show better. The dialogues are super fun too. For a show which has a band as its central driving force, the songs need to be good. And so Jeff Richmond has to be appreciated for making the songs catchy.
Like I said above if you like the comedy shows like 30 Rock you will definitely like this show, give it a try. It is better than Mr. Mayor and Great News(they didn't create it) but slightly below Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (for now).
Season Rating: B+
Little Things:
Some songs like New York lonely boy and the final song are good other than the opening theme
All the wacky moments and the dialogues fit perfectly into this world
The show's biggest selling point is that it doesn't have any dull moments. The show can be improved a lot but this season in itself a very good season of television
