Review Bytes [S02E50]: Big Shot [S01 First Half]

VK

The first half of this new sports drama is over with the release of its fifth episode today. So what's better than reviewing the 10 episodes long show in two halves (wink)

Marvyn Korn, a big shot former NCAA coach loses his job due to his temperamental behaviour during a game. So without any options lined up, he reluctantly chooses to coach a girl's private school team. While coaching there he helps and receives help from the people around him.

The pilot without a doubt felt like a Disneyfied version of "The Way Back", without its complexities and with a G rating. As the show progressed it didn't suddenly become better but it became a good guilty pleasure show which you consume once a week.

John Stamos as Marvyn Korn is the backbone for the show. He carries the show elegantly with his charm and wit. Casting for Korn's daughter and the team is neatly done. The father-daughter relationship plays a crucial role in the show too. Jessalyn Gilsig plays a good supporting role too. At first, Yvette Nicole Brown's Sherilyn seemed like a bad extension of Shirley and also her character was written badly. But as the series progressed we are now getting to see some progress in her character.

Each topic it touched moved along very quickly without lingering on it much. This is both its advantage and disadvantage. Marvyn's father's death shown on the show only for few minutes. It was good as the father's character was not fully explained at that point, so dealing with it for an entire episode would not have been a good choice. But lingering on some subjects would have made the show better. But a quick pace is very much welcomed for a guilty pleasure show in my opinion.

They are not showing the matches on-screen on regular basis, which may be for budget reasons. But it is not an issue as their alternative, the interpersonal relationships are covered nicely. The teenage players are starting to have some personal baggage to carry in the field. This adds a good drama element too.

Episodes Rating: B
