The third season of Master None has premiered on Netflix today. Are four years worth waiting for? Let us check out...
The show has a new name for this season, "The Moments in Love" and it focuses on Denise (Lena Waithe) and her wife Alicia (Naomie Ackie). This season goes deep into each chapter of their marriage. Their insecurities, their personal needs, and their struggles form these chapters.
First off, the 4:3 aspect ratio was perfect for the story they are telling. The Steadicam may seem off in some scenes which was not really a problem as it captures the emotions perfectly in most of the other scenes. Their experiment worked well. Along with this, the editing was good too. The random shots between the conversations add beauty to the story.
Unlike its predecessors, this season feels emotionally quite heavy. The writing and direction by Aziz Ansari and their above said experiment made this possible. You can feel the emotional rides the characters go through and you can also feel the tension in every scene they intended. If the cast and crew select their submissions perfectly they all have a good chance come the awards season. Alan Yang, the co-creator, told that they are going to submit the show in the comedy category.
Episodes one and four were my personal favorites as they tell a lot more storywise than the other episodes. The middle two episodes act as the bridge between the stories they wanted to tell. But they couldn't be combined as they are different chapters in their love. And the final episode acts as the epilogue to show, which perfectly caps off these leads moments in love.
The fourth episode is the standout, and it will definitely go down as one of the best in the year's list. Alicia's sterility was one of the central points for the season. Her struggles going through the hurdles were well captured in a very detailed 50 mins. Along with that the problem, in general, was covered nicely too.
The supporting characters like Darius and Cordelia were very well utilized. Their presence was nice and pleasant.
So yeah the wait is worth it.
Season Rating: A
Little Things:
A lot of time has passed between the first and the last episode, like many years. Any sign of time passing would have been good. When we see Alicia in the first episode she is 34 and in the fourth episode, she is 37. So yeah any indications would have been perfect.
Dev's role was good and sufficient to this story. But I can't keep wondering what happened to Dev in these past 5 years (just a wild guess).
Dev's storyline was perfectly set. His story is so interesting to visit now. So please Netflix renew the show for at least one more season and I request the writers to please connect the dots in the Dev's story.
Some close-up shots would have been good too.
